Ask Questions and Discuss this Guide

1) This infinitely repeatable quest which can be picked up at lvl 70 with Collector Gutenhagen at the southern edge of the Pavel Ruins. He asks you hunt all the Golems in the area and bring him 500 Broken Golem Fragments as proof. What Gutenhagen says about "Jackhammer Golems" is historical. Since the Freya update you have to kill lvl 72 Scout-type Golems No. 28, lvl 72 Cruel Pincer Golems and lvl 73 Drill Golems of Terror in the pits as well as lvl 72 Micro Scout Golems, lvl 72 Boom Golems, lvl 73 Guard Golems and lvl 73 Great Chaos Golems in and around the Laboratory buildings.

2) If you are only lvl 70, it will be better for you if you start in the pits south of the Dwarven encampment, the place marked with the quest pin. The Golems down there are all passive and non-social.

The lvl 72 Scout-type Golem No.28 in the screenshot above is a relatively straightforward monster. It attacks both physically and with single-target magic. If you have a baby pet like a Kookaburra or a Buffalo tag along, the Golem won't attack it, even when it is recharging resp. healing. If you have a Strider or Fenrir help you fight, however, you must take care to keep the aggression on you, otherwise your pet might occasionally get hit. For about every 3 or 4 kills you will get a Broken Golem Fragment.

The lvl 72 Cruel Pincer Golem, however, shows a more complex behavior. This is the "basic" form you will find in the pits, being weak to Bow/Crossbow Weapons:

When you have killed a passive basic form, there will with about 90% probability spawn an outwardly identical but aggressive "warrior type" Pincer Golem which has the same HP but is additionally weak to Melee Weapons and has a very weak P.Def., also giving the quest item but 1/3 less exp and having different drops and spoils. With a probability of about 10% the basic Pincer Golem will be replaced on its death with an aggressive "mage type", which again does not describe the properties of the Golem but those of the player. This variety has no weakness to any weapon and an extraordinarily strong P.Def. but also an extremely weak M.Def., giving almost the same exp as the basic type but different drops and spoils.

You have about one or two seconds between the death of the original Golem and the birth of the secondary form. Use that time to pick up any Herbs that might have been dropped. Unlike in the Laboratory itself, all monsters in the pits drop Herbs. As a solo hunter you absolutely need them.

The same principle goes for the lvl 73 Drill Golem of Terror. You have a passive basic form, which is weak to Bow and Crossbow Weapons, and then either a warrior type, which is weak to Melee Weapons, or a mage type with an extremely high P.Def. and which also attacks your pet first, while the other two types only attack the player character.

Very rarely you will find a passive "mage type" version (with extremely strong P.Def.) of the Cruel Pincer Golem or the Drill Golem of Terror as primary form. That variety does not spawn a second Golem, however.

A very peculiar monster is the Pavel Safety Device. It gives neither exp nor SP, but it drops a few hundred adena, Herbs, and above all Attribute Stones, albeit with a very low probability.

To make Stone farming not too easy, the Safety Device spawns one or two seconds after its death with about 80% probability one Drill Golem of Terror and one Cruel Pincer Golem, both aggressive. Use that short delay to pick up any Herbs, because when you have killed those two basic form Golems, they will then in turn spawn one secondary form each. In other words, you have to deal with four aggressive Golems, always two at a time. Among the secondary forms descended from the Pavel Safety Device there seem to be only the warrior types who are weak to melee weapons, none of the mage types with strong P.Def.

3) When you have 500 Broken Golem Fragments, return to Gutenhagen.

The Dwarf will give you a random S-Grade weapon recipe.

This quest is infinitely repeatable, so if you did not get the recipe you wanted, you can immediately pick up the quest again from Gutenhagen. Here all the possible rewards:

Recipe Angel Slayer

Recipe Heaven's Divider
