Magister Dieter

Dieter is a Magister in the Magic Guild at Giran and teaches new skills to Human adepts at magic. Originally he worked as an assistant for Elder Cronos in Hunters Village. Dieter had taken that job as a youth because he had a deep desire to learn magic. Cronos mainly wanted an errand boy, but through unobtrusive observation Dieter was able to learn much from the old man in the course of he years. Cronos, with the haughtiness that comes with old age, could be a very harsh master at times. One day he had told Dieter that he had absolutely no talent for magic at all and should consider becoming a farmer instead of working for an Elder like him. Dieter was deeply hurt and decided to, as a kind of petty revenge, to steal Cronos' "Scriptures of Knowledge", a transcript of Maphr's Tablet the Elder had compiled about 100 years ago. This rash act should have far-reaching consequences.

When he discovered that the book had been stolen, Elder Cronos flew into such a rage that, fearing for his life, Dieter immediately went to retrieve the "Scriptures of Knowledge" from their hiding place. But they were gone. Dieter did not dare to return to his master and went to the Town of Giran instead, where with the knowledge he had absorbed in the past years it was not difficult for him to find employment at the Magic Guild. Dieter became a good Magister, teaching many young mages, and gradually forgot about the "Scriptures of Knowledge".

Then one day, about twenty years later, he got a visit from a young wizard who was undergoing the Trial of the Scholar, aiming to become an advanced mage of his race. As it turned out, that wizard had been sent by Elder Cronos with the task to find the lost book. Dieter still had no idea where the "Scriptures of Knowledge" might be, but the stranger told him about Astrologer Creta in Floran Village. That woman had helped before with recovering a stolen alchemical recipe, and with her second sight she also found a clue in this case - this was not the work of one man but of a whole group of thieves, one of them definitely Human.

This hint prodded Dieter's memory into action. He now remembered that back in those days when the monsters in the Enchanted valley still dropped spellbooks which all sorts of mages and fighters needed to learn their skills there were many outsiders in Hunters Village. Most of them just came for the few spellbooks they needed, desperately hunting for days on end, but once they had what they wanted, they were never seen again. Others, however, seemed to have a more sinister purpose. There was one party in particular, two Humans, a Dwarf and a Dark Elf, who did not hunt at all and was always gone in the evenings. Dieter had even spoken with the Dark Elf once, and now looking back it seems as if he had been asking about Elder Cronos.

The inn where the strangers stayed does not exist any more and the old innkeeper died two years ago, but his son, Edroc, is still living in Hunters Village. When Dieter was still working for Elder Cronos, he had been good friends with Edroc, who is now running the weapons and armor shop in Hunters Village. Business is slow these days, so he has a lot of time to reminisce about the heyday of the village. He still has an old envelope that strange party left behind, with the address of Warehouse Keeper Raut in Gludin Village.

This started the young wizard off on a long journey all over the southern lands of Aden. From a drunkard in Gludin Harbor he found out that the group who had stolen the "Scriptures of Knowledge" had acted on a commission from the wizard Dasparion, who by now is almost as old as Cronos (Dasparion had acquired the knowledge of immortality from the Brown Elves, the ancestors of the Dark Elves). Four of the six chapters of the "Scriptures" were recovered by the young wizard, while two, the first and the last, seem to be still in the hands of Dasparion. But maybe that's for the best. Absolute Geometry is a very dangerous knowledge and no one single person should be in its possession.
