Princess Melissa

During the time of the Elmoreden Empire Gran Kain once travelled down to the earth together with Eva to take care of some affairs. While the god, as was his nature, became more and more uninhibited from day to day, he heard that the Imperial Princess Melissa, a niece of the Emperor, had been banished from the court by her uncle and his family members under the accusation of having meddled in black magic. As it later turned out, those were false accusations spread by her political opponents. Fact is that Melissa did meddle in magic, having become a great sorceress, but she had always stayed on the white side.

Escorted by her personal guard, the Canna Knights, she had moved to the abandoned Summer Labyrinth in Schuttgart Territory and settled there. While Melissa was trying to increase her magical powers so that she could take revenge for the disgrace she had suffered, Gran Kain realised that he could put the Princess to good use in one of his own elaborate schemes and decided to visit her.

But first the God of Darkness used some of the Spirit of Stagnant and Rotten Water he had used when creating mankind, enriched it with the power of his own dark light and created thus a Spirit of Water that contained the Light of the Abyss. This Spirit he sealed up in a crystal ball. He knew that Melissa would want to have that crystal ball as soon as she felt its power; then the Princess would certainly be open to negotiations.

Gran Kain, who had disguised himself as a traveling wizard, calling himself "Seyani", went to see Melissa in the castle where she was staying, located on an island on the northern outskirts of the Summer Labyrinth. Under the pretext that he would be "seeking her opinion about an object of black magic that had come into his possession during his wanderings" he applied for an audience.

Melissa willingly granted him an audience. When he finally stood in front of the Princess, Gran Kain proposed to give her the crystal ball in exchange for her cooperation. She, however, refused the suggestion. In the ensuing scuffle the orb fell to the ground and shattered; the watery essence, which contained the Light of the Abyss, splashed all around. Part of it penetrated into Melissa's heart, gradually transforming her, while the rest spread to the surroundings, seeking out the park animals in the Summer Labyrinth as hosts on which the Light of the Abyss started to prey as a parasite. Originally peaceful creatures turned into fierce monsters, attacking anybody that came too close.

Gran Kain could escape without anybody having recognized him. Meanwhile the Light of the Abyss, having seeped deeply into Melissa's body, kept devouring all warmth in her until she was frozen through and through. As soon as Melissa's transformation into the Ice Queen, later called Freya, was finished, the Summer Labyrinth quickly turned into the Frozen Labyrinth we know today.

Not only Melissa, but also her handmaiden Sirra, who was standing next to her during her meeting with "Seyani", got transformed. The once beautiful maid got hit by a piece of the shattered crystal orb, with disastrous results.

The Captain of Melissa's bodyguard had had a crush on the Princess. When she suddenly vanished, he set out to find out what had happened. Discovering that she had become the Ice Queen he was deeply saddened. Melissa/Freya, on the other hand, was ashamed and transformed him into a Gargoyle. Now he protects the Frozen Labyrinth from interlopers as "Captain of the Ice Queen's Royal Guard".
